The Mayhew’s Pet Refuge programme provides support and foster care for pet owners facing a personal crisis and with no options of help for care with their pet.
This may be for a number of reasons, including hospitalisation, old age, rehab or detox, fire or flood in the home or even for those sent to prison, although please note that we’re unable to provide this service for people who are between homes.
Pet Refuge involves our Animal Welfare Officers finding the best possible foster carer for the dog and/or cat for the duration of the crisis period, ensuring that the animal is placed into the familiar environment of a home rather than a potentially stressful shelter environment.
For Elizabeth who frequently has to visit hospital for treatment, often at only a moment’s notice, the Pet Refuge Scheme was the only place she could turn to for help with looking after her beloved dog. She explains:
‘It is so satisfying for someone who loves their animal to know that they are being well cared for. My dog always comes home relaxed and calm, and the foster carer assures me that he settles in quickly. Ultimately, knowing that my dog is being treated well gives me one less thing to worry about. The Mayhew have been so flexible in looking after my pet, especially when I have had to receive emergency treatment – I don’t know what I would have done without Pet Refuge.’
