The Mayhew has been working tirelessly in Afghanistan since 2001 to improve the welfare of dogs and cats and tackle the issue of stray and street animals in Kabul. We are now a registered NGO in Afghanistan to implement a mass rabies vaccination and humane Trap Vaccinate Neuter and Release programme. Over the years, Mayhew International’s Dr. Mohammadzai DVM has provided extensive veterinary training for vets and vet students at Kabul University and in shelters, as well as provide veterinary care and surgery for the free-roaming dogs in Kabul.

Rufus’ Story

A stray street dog, affectionate and friendly Rufus was brought into Kabul shelter, Tigger House.

Rufus unfortunately had developed a chronic, infected wound on his hind leg.  In pain, he was clearly suffering and distressed and he continually licked the wound which irritated it and made it worse.

Various antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs had previously been used which did not work.  Dr. Mohammadzai decided to treat Rufus’ wound with special Afghanistan natural honey that started to improve the infection, and under Dr. Mohammadzai’s care and treatment, Rufus’ wound was completely healed.  Rufus will be starting his new life with a loving family soon.

The Mayhew has recently signed a landmark agreement with Kabul City authorities to halt the cruel practice of dog culling. Your donation will also help us to introduce an animal welfare strategy incorporating a sustainable and planned rabies vaccination programme to eliminate rabies, combined with humane dog population control.
