Rupert was an innocent puppy who didn’t go to the park or play with toys. He spent his early life fearing for his life, cowering and waiting for another beating from his abusive owner. His yelps and cries were so loud they were heard by neighbours. The abuse and neglect was reported to us and our Animal Welfare Officers rescued Rupert and brought him back to The Mayhew where we spent two months caring for him. We gave him the time to trust people and the love and affection he deserved. He could also rest, play and get back to physical and psychological health.

To give him the very best in care and help, we also arranged for him to spend some time at a specialist rehabilitation centre for Rottweilers. During his stay there, he learnt everything for life in a new home with other Rottweiler companions including learning to swim. Rupert was eventually rehomed  to his forever home by Rottie Rehab where he never had to fear for his life or endure abuse again.

We see abusive cases all the time, but thanks to our Animal Welfare Officers, we can combat abuse and neglect and ensure that dogs and cats reach the safety and care offered by us. Our Animal Welfare Officers also carry out hundreds of hours of work behind the scenes working with owners who are finding it hard to care for and manage with their pets. These cases can potentially become abuse or neglect cases, however, they work tirelessly to prevent issues before they arise which is good news for the animals concerned.
