Mayhew International in Georgia – Latest Updates

The Mayhew International team is currently in Tbilisi, Georgia to provide further veterinary training and advice on shelter management.

Working with the Agrarian University Veterinary Clinic in Tbilisi, Mayhew International held a Neuter and Spay Day on Sunday 16th October 2016 at the Clinic offering free neutering for street and shelter dogs. The Mayhew’s Head Vet, Dr. Ursula Goetz MRCVS, GP Cert(SAS), carried out the surgery alongside Dr. Marika Chkhikvishvili, who has been Head Vet at the University Clinic for the past three years. In 2009 Dr. Ursula trained Dr. Marika at The Mayhew’s Vet Clinic in London as part of our International Vet Training Programme. As the Head Vet at the University Clinic, Dr. Marika has since passed on her Mayhew training to her own students as well as newly qualified vets in Georgia. The training team also included Dr. Mao Gulashvili and Dr. Lili Mezhlumiani, who have trained with Dr. Ursula.

Mayhew International’s Spay Day focused on spaying and neutering surgery for dogs who are brought to the Clinic from local animal welfare groups and individuals involved with monitoring street and free-roaming dogs in the local communities. Approximately 40 dogs were spayed and neutered on the day to give vets and vet students the opportunity to see and learn about high volume, but safe and secure neutering techniques.

The Spay Day also provided an insight into pre- and post-operative care, protocols and techniques for improved animal handling, asepsis, efficient sterilisation techniques and pain management.  Implementing these best practice methods significantly helps to control animal discomfort during surgery, the risk of complications post-operation and minimises the risk to the animals before, during and after spay, neutering and general surgery.

During their 10 day visit to Georgia, the Mayhew International team will be discussing the Veterinary Science Degree curriculum with the Agrarian University with the aim to develop a minors course in dog and cat medicine and surgery starting from the academic year 2016-17. The team also visited the Rustavi Municipal Shelter, 40 kms outside of Tbilisi, for a vet training day. Dr Lili, who was trained by our Head Vet Dr. Ursula, came to help as an assistant with Dr. Grisha. Dr Lili and Dr Grisha have recently opened their own practice in Georgia and we hope to organise a TNR programme with them in the future.

After visiting Rustavi, the team returned to the Municipal Dog Shelter in Tbilisi to provide further veterinary training and advice on shelter management and improvements for the dog and cat environments at the shelter. Dr. Ursula trained the vets at the shelter, Nodari and Soso. You can see photos from their successful training day below. We’re very pleased with the improvements made at the shelter following our recommendations.
