A Painting Fit for a Prince

After spending an incredible 330 days at The Mayhew Animal Home, one of our longest stayers, Prince, has finally found a new forever home and his happily ever after.

The gorgeous four-year-old American Akita has made quite an impression on The Home, that he even has his very own pawtrait, which was auctioned to raise vital funds to help The Mayhew help more animals like Prince.

During our annual Tinsel and Tails event last year, artist, Claire Thorogood, painted a bespoke portrait of Prince throughout the fundraising evening in December.

Having spent 11 months waiting for his forever home since he was brought into The Mayhew because of his previous owner’s ill health, adorable Prince cost The Mayhew on average over £19,000 during his time with us. That’s why, with this auction, we hoped to raise as much money as we can to help with the cost of looking after and finding more cats and dogs new homes.

The Mayhew’s Kennels Assistant, Josh Keegan, said: “Prince has been one of our longest stayers during 2016 and he was with us for over 330 days.”

“Everyone at The Mayhew absolutely loved Prince – he ‘s such an affectionate boy, who absolutely loves cuddles, back rubs and strokes. It will be sad not to see him every day, but I’m over the moon that he’s found a perfect new home that he truly deserves.”

With 20 bids, the painting raised £205 that will go towards us helping thousands more dogs and cats escape a life of abandonment, cruelty and neglect. On average it costs us £58 for the daily running of an individual kennel and £250 on average for full healthcare per dog while staying with us at The Mayhew.

Artist, Claire Thorogood, added: “Painting the gorgeous boy, Prince, at The Mayhew’s Tinsel and Tails event was a real pleasure and highlight. Prince’s portrait is painted in acrylic using soft brush techniques. To be able to donate this painting for auction is really an honour.”

The Mayhew’s Vet Team give all of the dogs and cats that come into our care a thorough health check, including vaccinating, neutering, and treating them for fleas and worms. Our experienced Kennels and Cattery Team spend hours feeding them, socialising and making them feel comfortable, and our Adoption Team work tirelessly to find them new forever homes.
